DA

As an example, "sports" has a ton of fandom and fans that doesn't have and don't consume any fanwork at all. They just watch or play the sport. Idt anyone is going to tell the football fandom at large that they aren't a fandom even if they've no clue what a "shipfic" is.

If I told sports fans in my life they were in sports fandom they would have one of two reactions - confusion because they have no idea what fandom is, or laughter because no.

You can definitely be in a sports fandom (Hockey rpf is everywhere as we all know) but just being a fan of sports and being in sports fandom are two very different things imo.

I mean, they are part of the overarching sports fandom. "Fandom" doesn't mean just "people who create fanwork."

AYRT see this is where you lose me, I don't think being a fan of something makes you part of the fandom. There are shows I'm a fan I but never join the fandom. And I don't think you have to create fanworks to be in fandom, but you have to at least consume them. I don't think fandom is a passive thing and I think it has to go beyond just liking a thing.

So like when someone considers themselves part of the Swifties and follows all the news and buys all the albums but doesn't consume any fanwork, they're not Taylor Swift's fandom?

I wouldn't say so, no. Swifties are fans but not a fandom.

Although they're probably a fandom too. Probably some crossover.

but what about RPF about Taylor Swift?

That would be someone in fandom.

Its not the subject its how people are interacting with it. You can be a Taylor Swift fan but not in TS fandom, or you can be a fan and in fandom.

I would actually say it's people who like a thing and consume or create other content (doesn't have to be fic or art) related to it.

Watch Friends? You're a fan. Watch Vikings football? You're a fan. If you nerd out with stats and paint your body purple and you're part of an online or RL group to talk about it, I'd consider that a fandom activity, I think.

Well, I don't know; that distinction might not be as cut-and-dried as you think. There's a series ads for March Madness on ESPN+ that uses "fandom" to describe the activity of sports fans in general, not people who are writing fic. So, there are at the very least some media figures who use a broader definition of fandom -- and that means there are probably fans who do, as well.

You can be part of something without knowing what it is. As evidenced here, in people trying and failing to define fandom.

I think if you're a fan enough of a sport to do fantasy leagues, you're in a fandom whether you know it or not.

Right? Like imagining somebody who follows sports religiously, plays sports video games, plays fantasy leagues, talks about their favorite players to people all the time then being like "bro I'm not in a fandom"

lol
