Ah, but accepting a tried-and-true genre convention isn't an edgy hot take with a chance of going viral and giving whoever came up with it their five minutes of fandom fame.

I don't think that's the point of calling Grandpa Joe a scumbag, considering he's supposed to be Charlie's outsider influence regarding loss of innocence and growing up, but okay, anon.

Tell me you don’t understand Roald Dahl’s works without telling me you don’t understand Roald Dahl’s works.

But OP, everyone knows Grandpa Joe is a secret cokehead!

For various family reasons, I embrace the "Grandpa Joe is a scumbag" argument.

I still say that's not the problem. The problem is he talked Charlie into stealing fizzy lifting drinks and Wonka had a right to be pissed off about it.

+1 Came here to say this. Grandpa Joe is a scumbag, but not for staying in bed.

Yeah, but the narrative k8nda recognises that when Charlie gives the gobstopper back. He isn't on his Grandpa's side in indignation.

That part isn't in the book, so it really doesn't exist.

one reason I liked the book better

That sounds really snobby, nonny.

Yes it's a musical. A musical where one of the characters is a scumbag. He's a scumbag later in the movie in a plot relevant way. It's like foreshadowing or something.

Honest to God, the number of people I encounter online who don't know ANY of the conventions of children's literature astounds me. I always wonder whether they only began to read at twenty and are trying to catch up, but have to keep stopping to be outraged.

Completely agree with you.

It’s a stupid “edgy” take that doesn’t add to anything interesting to the story. (And isn’t any kind of fucking forshadowing for his later actions)

I don't think Grandpa Joe is a scumbag, but I wish Charlie had taken his mum with him. She probably needs a break.
