Huh, I actually really like what they've done with Ozai because for me the guy was one of the worst villains I've ever seen in the cartoon. He was the Final Boss for Aang to thwart but had no character outside of that, while the LA version is a fucking horrible father and I am enjoying hating the shit out of him.

I also don't think he's softened at all? We seen him emotionally manipulate and abuse his kids every time he's on screen, he pits them against each other and nothing either of them do is good enough. He's not nice like at all. Azula seems similar to me if simply also a victim of an abusive father, idk what way they'll take her but I wouldn't mind her getting a shot at redemption if they go for that(no clue) because I found it weird in the cartoon how a 14 year old was treated as evil for existing and kind of ignored that she also would have been a victim of abuse?

TLDR: I disagree with you OP but also you can feel how you do, I'm not trying to change your mind, just my opinion.

On a scale to DBZ:LA or One Piece:LA, how good is that as someone with no knowledge of the source material?

I'm probably not a good metric for this as I thought the DBZ movie was absolutely hilarious and I've never read/seen the original One Piece but I liked the LA: I found the Avatar LA to be sort of in the middle-ish?

Basically as a fan of the OG cartoon there were things I liked and things I disliked, overall I had fun and wasn't expecting too much from it so I had a good time.

I also have no knowledge of the source material and I'd agree on middle-ish. Unlike OPLA it didn't really make me want to put the next episode on and a lot of the scenes seemed disjointed; like the writers were ticking off necessary scenes rather than a seamless narrative. But the show does have some really good moments, some of the sets are gorgeous and the fight scenes (including the bending) are amazing.

I get what they were going for with Azula. This is one spot were I think the original could have used some improvement, that it's so sympathetic to the abused Zuko but not really to Azula who's grown up with the same shitty dad. Unfortunately I feel like they did this way too soon, I feel like it undercuts Azula's menace to have her shown so early as a troubled teenager being pitted against her brother by her dad. Azula's supposed to be the golden child, 'born lucky,' and a dangerous villain when she shows up in season two. I feel like the arc the live action is giving her now should have been mid-season two or season three, after she's already been built up as a villain.

(Also incidental to this but lord am I tired of shows needing to explain shit that didn't need an explanation. We don't need to see how Azula got lightning bending or blue fire. She can just have those things because she's skilled, we don't need to know ~the origin story~ of her powers!)

Re the parenthetical quote: they may be assuming (unwisely?) that not all the live-action series viewers are familiar with the ins and outs of the original show and might like an explanation. After all, the original went off the air 16(!!) years ago...

You don't need to be familiar with the ins and outs of the original though, in the cartoon she's just using lightning in her first appearance and it gets explained later. The blue fire I don't think they ever explain, it's just a thing she does. The live action added a whole origin story to her powers that was wholly unnecessary just to shoehorn her into the show a season early.

Wouldn't exactly call OG Ozai a badass, and he was about as interesting as Unalaq.
