I feel that.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to the max.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Mood.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
God yes. I am in this bookclub my friend started (only in it to support her) and every book they choose has been dreadful real world setting stuff. Usually dealing with "modern struggles" or "raw emotion" or some such and god I hate it. I read to escape raw emotional modern struggles.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn’t do it. I’d just have to tell my friend that the choices are impacting my mental health and that I’m better off sticking with optimistic fiction.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, no modern struggles and raw emotion for me, either. I get enough of that in real life. :(

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hard same.

I have some bad news about history if you're looking for a world that's less depressing/horrifying than modern Earth. (I get it tho, I'm not generally into non-sff fiction either.)

Yes. Yes, please. Jayzus.

Post WW2 authors looked around at the horrors of a shattered country, and wrote wish-fulfilment novels which led people to believe in a better and happier way. Current authors look around at a suffering and struggling world, and they chose to fucking write nihilism-fulfilment stories which encourage us all to just lie down and die.

Fucking judging you, current authors, fucking judging you so fucking hard.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
This is such an absurd overgeneralization.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
God, you mean a comment on a snark board might generalize? Say it ain't so. Unprecedented and completely at odds with all the well researched, Harvard level, studies also posted here.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Go back to ranting about Palestine.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously?

I'm just annoyed we keep talking like no one today writes optimistic fiction and no one post WW2 wrote pessimistic fiction. It's way past the point of reasonable generalization. Plenty people were despondent in 1946 and people who are despondent now aren't committing a crime against the human race.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Stop being over dramatic.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because they watched the post-WWII generation fuck it all up...

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
WW1 and the Great Depression would like a word with you.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think you missed a finer point. Post WWII America was going pretty strong, and through the 60s and 70s was even (in fits and starts) making social progress.

Then the Yippies turned into Yuppies, and... well, we're still feeling the fallout from that.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
The gilded age and the roaring twenties have just joined the chat too...

Newsflash, pallie, but this generation ain't going through anything new.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
you mean giant corporations, oil companies and dark money? that is where the vast majority of the toxic fallout is coming from.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would take yuppies and the materially-motivated 100 times over the current crop of culturally-conservative republicans.

I know what motivates greedy fuckers. Have no clue what's motivating these shitty people. (I mean, I do; there are culture wars so republicans can get elected now that we all know trickle down economics don't work.)
