It's weird, I haven't seen wank over a fic in a while! Wank seems to be over people's personal opinions instead which is far more unpleasant and dull.

Older Than Netfic on Tumblr collects a lot of secondhand wank reports.

Wank about fic is now perceived as rude, if not downright cruel. Fic is just for fun, it's a labor of love, it's all this work for free, it's amateur rather than professional, etc.

But people are people, so they've still gotta find some reason to wank, and "I don't like your opinions" can fairly easily be framed in terms of morality and righteousness.
