I feel like Casino Royale is a better movie but Skyfall is a better Bond movie, precisely because it has some of that old school campy flavor woven in.

I mean, Bond movies are a spectrum. Casino Royale is shoved way to one end of that spectrum but it's still a Bond movie, just like From Russia With Love was. It's also one of the movies that's most faithful to the original books.

I'm treating "bond movie" as a cultural institution in its own right at this point more than anything that derives its quality from the books tbh

and you're right that it's a spectrum, but I feel like Skyfall is a little more comfortably closer to the middle of that spectrum. it's nowhere near as campy or light-hearted as even the brosnan movies, for example, but it's got a little more of that flair - you can really see in the different locations the way skyfall is an homage to different styles and eras of the bond franchise

casino royale is great for what it's trying to be, but I do get the feel sometimes that what it's trying to be is something more polished/realistic/respectable than a bond movie

anyway, I like them both, but I can see why OP would single out Skyfall only, if that was a quality that was important to them

I can understand why OP might not like Casino Royale as much but I don't agree that it isn't a Bond movie, basically.
