Yeah, this is honestly why I can't be bothered with comics. Everyone always says "Oh, just pick something to read!" but I just can't enjoy something when it feels like I'm missing parts and need to do research in order to fully understand the story or characters.

If you don't want to be bothered, ignore this. But if you're comics-curious, it's worth noting that, for DC and Marvel at least, continuity is kind of an illusion. Like, there are certain things that are immutable, like "Uncle Ben is dead" and "Captain America fought in WWII," but most of the rest of the backstory is fair game for whatever appeals to modern sensibilities and the current writers. So if there actually is a storyline that interests you, you really can just read that arc and ignore 90% of what came before it. Anything historic that's actually relevant to the plot at hand is likely to have a footnote explaining it anyway.

SA: Think of it like professional wrestling. The characters exist semi-separately from their backstories, and when those backstories change then most of the audience has collectively agreed to just go with it.

Frankly it annoys me even more.
I am also overwhelmed by the sheer amount but I dropped comics because no decent continuity annoys the hell out of me. So I prefer "graphic novels" not out of pretentiousness but mostly because they are self-contained
