I feel you. Like... sometimes characters SHOULD be parents, or canonically are parents, but it does not make the too-precious fanfic toddlers any more bearable. And sometimes I want to write it but I don't want to read it just because I don't trust that any given writer knows what a human child sounds like.

I feel like this is a "Teehee look at me, my kidfic is not like other kidfic!" and then the scenario you describe is pretty much... like cutesy kidfic with cutesy gross out factor. Not that much of a rebellion, really.

Toddlers are adorable IRL, but difficult to make entertaining as characters in fiction.

This is not helped by the fact that many people writing about young kids haven't had much experience with them. This means they either write them as much more mature or immature than a kid of that age usually is.

Also, a lot of writers don't even consider writing a toddler as a character, and instead use them like a plot device.

Like, they don't need a 3 page monologue or a Journey of a 1000 Faces style character arc. But if you are aware of how toddlers act it can be incorporated into the story. The toddler chucking a tantrum could lead to a meet cute. The toddler being obsessed with [insert typical toddler interest] might lead to a connection with their parent's love interest. If one of the toddler's parents was in the picture and now isn't, dealing with the toddler's separation anxiety could be a plot point that is incorporated into the rest of the plot organically. Just dealing with a realistic schedule of a toddler could be incorporated into the plot organically.

Basically, toddlers are sweet mini humans who are trying their best to understand the world. They deserve better than being one dimensional butts of jokes or unrealistic charicatures.

Sometimes, like a soap opera, you just gotta jump in the middle of a story and follow fro that point onward while gathering the story along the way.

There's a few approaches I find useful...

1. Pick a specific run (i.e. one of the ones that features regularly on rec lists by a specific writer) and you'll probably be looking at trade paperbacks, but watch out for the super expensive special editions that get published from time to time, you can always find cheaper even if it's second hand.
2. Just dive right on in at current publication point, use wikis/fan sites as back up for lore catch-up. It'll probably all get blown up and they'll effectively start over at some point anyway so just enjoy the ride. Staff in comic book stores can even get you started with a pull list based on whatever your preferences are (characters, universe, whatever.)
3. Just pick individual graphic novels or trade paperbacks based on whichever famous oneshots or storylines take your fancy.

I still feel utterly hopeless a lot of the time but as long as you're having fun with the characters you care about exploring it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Maybe you're just not a comics person? I just read them too fast and they're not satisfying to me. I was in MCU fandom for years and could not get into the comics at all. Either give me text or a film, not text with images.

Ok OP, here's how you do it.

Think of reading the long running superhero comics like reading about history. Can you read a book about WWII without knowing everything about WWI? SURE! Will you get more out of that WWII book once you've watched 5 documentaries and read 12 books and made your own podcast about WWI? YOU BET! And you'd get even more out of it if you spoke German/French/Russian and had a thorough grounding in Japanese politics and Pacific oceanography and English cattle farming BUT YOU DON"T HAVE TO! It's ok to just think tanks are cool. You're allowed to watch Finding Private Ryan and just enjoy it. No prior reading required.

So comics! Think of which characters rock the hardest. Write down three. Now go here: https://www.comicbookherald.com/where-to-start-reading-marvel-comics/. Scroll down and see which rec list calls to you. Then make a list based on your fav characters.

Recommended second step: Take your list to your local library and put holds on anything you can. Comics are expensive as shit and it's way more fun to read on paper as God and Jack Kirby intended. If your local library sucks google how to Read Comics Online to find online options in your budget. Once you've figured out what you like you can start buying trades (4-6 issues published together) or omnibuses (50ish issues published together, often in black and white) or following current/ongoing series (single issues/floppies). I'd hate for you to blow 200 bucks just to discover you fucking hate the Fantastic Four in the 60s or whatever.

Advanced third step: follow tumblr users who love your fav characters and see what they're screaming about every Wednesday. See what they reblog from. Read that shit.

Long story short: You got this! And there's no hurry, the stories will be there for you when you're ready. There's so much for you to discover and enjoy out there! Good luck OP I'm pulling for you.

The thing that helped me when I was just getting started was picking a characters and looking into what there was currently, then finding back issues. From a character you'll find other characters you like and also figure out what writers you like. There will be storylines and authors you just don't vibe with and there's no pressure to continue with something you don't like.

Check out the library. You can find a lot on Hoopla and Libby. Also Marvel and DC have apps. Comic book shops are usually a great place two. Some suck, so don't be afraid to try different ones. I got lucky and have two really great ones near me.

Number 2 omg. My opinion of this country's photography was too high.
Number 5 is an absolute fluke. Slider stopped at this date and I thought why not, seems like a year. And this city just seems like the most green one it's all I know about it.
