Because it equates books to fanfic. Which isn't good. It also encourages people who are not knowledgeable about fics, to buy fics in physical form. Which is also not good.

And reviewers for these free fan works also treat them as books when reviewing them. And I do not think that books and fanfic should be reviewed in the same way.

A lot of fic writers want to keep their works in the walled fandom garden (AO3 and tumblr) and not in book review places. I can see their POV here. (I just write short one-shots so it's not like anybody's comparing my work to novels.)

Here we go again.

Published books are sent out into the world, with the understanding that they will be subject to reviews.

Fanfiction is shared with a like-minded community, within the space carved out for that community and not intended to be seen or consumed outside that community. Yes, "if you post a thing on the Internet, it might be shared elsewhere", but that doesn't change the fact that shoving someone else's work onto a site they didn't consent to be a part of, just because it falls into the category of 'a thing written with words', is in bad fucking taste.

There is a big web 1.0 (or web 1.0 adjacent) movement! People making their own little sites with webrings and guestbooks, and sometimes forums too. Or helping people move away from social media to more independent social experiences etc.
