So-so Animaniacs skit. Still better than Katie Kaboom though.

They are the creatives, just not the owners. I feel like, if you work in that industry, you should understand that you don't own the things you create. You're just another employee who was hired to do a job. You got paid, and now they own the things you created.

This.

The Animator's Survival Kit had a quote that stayed with me, and that I keep thinking about regarding not just art and creative systems, but about political systems in generals.

"Remember the golden rule: He who has the gold makes the rules. If you want to make your own art, use your own gold."

Years down the line, I would realize how poignant this quote is, due to Richard Williams himself having been a perfectionist for The Thief and the Cobbler while getting funding from everyone, only to later not want to speak about the project.

OK, if that were true, why do directors and writers get all the blame and get less work after their films bomb, while the studios' only real consequence is losing money? Assuming they don't just write the loss off and make money anyway.

Bass ackwards

Pretty sure you got that utterly backwards. The writers and the directors do all of the creative work. The studios are simply committees who happen to hold the purse strings.

Directors have a lot of say, but screenwriters really don't, compared to the director and producers. Multiple writers have said to become a novel writer and get your work optioned, because you'll have significantly more say than a screenwriter. Doesn't sound like the screenwriters are really holding the power to me.

Knowing people in the industry, and how the industry works - the creatives are definitely not the studios.
