cash is king

Cash is real. I spend it, I don't have it anymore. Contactless spending doesn't feel real, makes it hard to budget. I actively avoid anywhere that will not take physical cash and try to make cash purchases everywhere except occasional online orders. Cash gives choice and freedom. I don't want the rise of 'vouchers you can only spend if and when the government says so and we track exactly what you're buying'; the freezing of customer's bank accounts in Canada because they "supported a 'bad' cause" should have set off alarm bells for more people, and banks telling you how much 'carbon' you've used is sinister, suggesting carbon rationing.

And you might think you're immune but eventually it will be YOUR cause or your carbon usage that gets hammered and it will be too late to backpedal because you liked the convenience of a plastic card over using actual cash.

Yes to all this. I remember many years ago someone saying he took 20 quid out at the beginning of the week (!) and could see it going down, and that was how he controlled his spending. It's still highly effective, even though the amount is much higher now. I like being invisible as regards spending and I like knowing to the cent how much I've got left, all the time.

Also, I hate how unreliable online banking is. I've been chucked off my account for no reason enough times that I stress every time I log in, especially when I'm overseas and can't do much about it. I've told a bank I'm going to be overseas and had my spending blocked even so. When I got back I asked what if I needed to pay a hospital bill and they'd blocked my account? They said the answer was to get an account with another bank and get a card linked to that. I mean, that's great if you've got the money.

Nothing works and they don't bloody care. I blame Thatcher's generation.
