Those continued being a thing up until the idea of serial TV with weekly releases was essentially fully destroyed by the Internet.

I wish more streaming shows would be released weekly but even then, shows rarely feel like that serialized format where you can jump into any episode. I like mythology arcs but I wish it wasn’t such a default.

I just miss genre with small stakes. It feels like the world or universe or the fabric of reality always has to be at risk.

I miss episodic, weekly release TV shows where the seasons run 24+ episodes or something like that. I mean sure, there's always filler and not great episodes, but you know what? Having a limited run season doesn't seem to guarantee quality or a coherent story arc even when there are only 4-10 episodes, so... /shrug

Mostly I miss TV that had standalone episodes so you could drop in and watch, then drift away and come back and still mostly understand what's going on. I'm also not always impressed by the (short) season-long plot arcs shows come up with.

I miss filler episodes. They gave the plot time to breath and fleshed out the characters.

they really didn't though, i've seen this going around recently with people mourning the lack of filler episodes and i am really wondering if people know what filler episodes are or remember them correctly. filler episodes did not add anything, they didn't flesh out the characters in any way, because if they did that they wouldn't be FILLER. literally those episodes existed just to waste time and i hated them.

i don't care for the 8 episode stuff that's happening on NF and other streaming places, but the 12-13 episodes we got in the 2010's were fantastic because they did away with awful filler episodes and told a good story. the issue is the reduction of overall episode count, not filler episodes leaving. those can stay gone.

Yeah, they did. I remember people saying at the time that they hated them and contributed nothing and I wondered if people just didn't get it. Guess they didn't.

it's because they contributed nothing. it's not rocket science. the whole point of a filler episode is that it filled time just to fill time, by it's very nature they did nothing to advance any part of the story character or main plot, if an episode was a bit slower on main plot stuff but still did character work that wasn't filler.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you mean for animes, some of which have legit filler episodes to keep time slots while taking a break because they don't have seasons like western media. But I'm talking about so-called filler episodes in western media, which aren't actually fillers.

Arguably, people watched the TV series because they enjoyed the characters and premise of the series. Even a "Filler" episode will have that. That's a lot of the time what people want from series. Therefore, a "Filler" episode will still contribute.

exactly. the whole point is that you can skip filler episodes without missing any sort of plot or character development. they don't change the status quo of the characters or the plot at all.

DA, but I think there are two widely accepted, but different, definitions of "filler episode," and one was more valuable than the other. Because on the one hand, you have character-driven episodes that don't move the main plot forward but do deepen your understanding of canon relationships, add to the world-building, and provide time for the fandom to process, theorize, and build up anticipation for the next plot climax. On the other hand, you have clip shows.

You have a very narrow view of what filler episodes are. Other people found them interesting and that it expanded their view of a world/characters. It's silly for you to argue that their experience was wrong.

if it expands on the world or the characters then by definition it's not a filler episode, it's just not a plot-heavy episode.

Again, a very narrow definition. Too narrow to be useful. It wasn't uncommon for a TV show in those days to have season-long arc(s), and then to have what THEY would term a filler episode because they had extra episodes to fill, or simply wanted to have a breather in between major plot developments. Those filler episodes were made to stand alone (so they could be inserted as needed), to NOT be a part of the major arc, and by definition that usually meant that it was a character exploration story, or something that would not affect the main plot arc in a significant way. A side adventure. Those could absolutely serve to deepen the understanding of the characters, or to get a little glimpse into an aspect of their lives that doesn't necessarily get explored otherwise. It could be a light, relatively low conflict, low stakes story.

But they're filler episodes, because that's what the creators called them, and that's what they were intended. It's just that "filler" isn't the derogatory term that you seem to think it is, and it doesn't automatically mean the episode doesn't add anything to the story and characters.

Eh. Some of the supposed "filler" episodes on The X-Files are still fan favorites long after people got tired of the mythology episodes that were the proper story.
