Favourite “found family” dynamics?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Which media or fanfic fandoms do you like for the “found family” dynamic?

Extra points if it doesn’t sort neatly into mother/father/child roles and it’s more messy familial intimacy!

Found family is probably the main reason I love X-Men. I didn’t actually realize that until like a week ago though. It’s come up in FS a lot recently and I always loved the mutants because I’m such an outsider. I’m watching X-Men: Evolution now and it’s just so painfully obvious: I was rejected by my bio family as an infant and my relationship with my adoptive family isn’t good. I’ve always loved everyone living in the mansion no matter which version of X Men it is, and I love the strong bonds that form but also kinda don’t always fit neatly into a specific box. Personal histories and hierarchy within the X Men can have two characters being like sibs in one story and distant cousins in another and parent child in the next. I absolutely eat it up!

I love it! FS is actually inspiring me to get back into X-Men after many years.

I think that found family is a great way of characterizing the dynamics between these characters who are cast out and find new bonds within the group.

And I absolutely feel the love for fictional found family when real family doesn’t measure up.

Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender, Supernatural, Mandalorian, and is Batfam cheating?

I prefer siblings roles to parental.

I do like the relationships of the ATLA characters.

I’m interested, what found family are you seeing in Supernatural?

Not that anon, but there's a lot of it in fic, with Charlie, Kevin, Bobby, Claire etc. and Dean, Sam, and Cas living in the bunker (or elsewhere in an AU) like the Avengers tower fic sorts of stuff.

In addition to Team Free Will, there's Donna and Jody and the girls they take in!

Avengers because all their parents are dead, in the tradition of most superheroes. Great big sibling sort of thing with everyone in the tower.

One Piece is just found family in all the different variations: the good, the evil, the hilarious.

Even everyone's favourite psycho assassin has recently been revealed to actually care about his slightly less psycho assassin teammate, properly vindicating the shippers from over a decade ago.

My found family faves don't fall into family roles, its more just a bunch of people who click and love each other.

I think the Avengers/MCU fandom trope of "everyone lives at the tower" is peak found family. Some of the fic were over the top and ooc, but a lot of it was golden.

X-Men is a classic canon for it.

The Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey and the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce all feature found family tropes and are favorites.
