Just read ATLA airbender fic that was marked as complete. 150,000+ words. Last two chapters were just "chapter will be posted soon." From years ago. Whyyyyy is it marked complete?

Yeah, that sounds pretty obnoxious. I get the author might be "done" with it but that's not the same thing as the story being complete.

I've seen people mark their WiP as complete but with a note in the summary that the fic has been abandoned and I think that's fine, there's a warning on the tin after all.

Complete fic that isn't finished is aggravating though I agree, it's actually why I don't read WiP's anymore because people would label them as 'done' when they'd just cut off in the last chapter with no resolution.

Thing is, at least on A03, they have a tag for it. Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued

(Anonymous) 2024-04-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's entirely possible the tag was used in those cases too, I just tend to skim tags a bit and not notice them all. It's also been a while since I've seen that so I couldn't tell you what those fics were tagged as.

I think it is okay to mark an abandoned fic complete if and only if the writer makes it clear that it is abandoned upfront. Put it in the summary, in the author's notes before the first chapter, and/or the tags.

It's NOT okay.

The point of that tag is to only have complete fics come up in a search. Tagging an incomplete fic with it then putting 'lol sorry I abandoned it' is garbage behaviour.

It's reach-spamming, just like tagging every possible ship when only one features is reach spamming.

Sure, it gets more eyes on your work if you lie in the tags, but everyone who has to scroll past it thinks you're a dickbag.

ayrt

It's okay to me. It's no longer a work-in-progress since there won't be any more progress. I mean, I've read works that have ended with giant surprise cliffhangers, and those are technically completed. I guess I don't see that much difference with a work marked as abandoned, except it would be less frustrating to me, since it would be marked. I'm not sure why scrolling past is such a problem, but if everyone marked them as abandoned, you filter them out.

Lately, I've seen fic labeled complete even though it's still updated regularly. I didn't understand why at first until I remembered a lot of readers have been vocal about how they filter for completed fic. I guess fanfic writers will find a way.

I just block these people.

If you lie in tags to extend your reach to people who specifically don't want your work, you're either a brazen asshole or so stupid you don't understand tags, in which case I'm gonna assume you can't write something coherent and also that you possibly drool into your keyboard.

I usually look to see if something that isn't finished has been updated recently. If it's been a year, I don't get my hopes up.

Though I have completed a fic myself after more than a year!

I'm guilty of having a couple of fics that I haven't finished and they've been on the shelf since 2018. Main reason being I fell out of the fandom or the series cancelled out a few theories I had (I started writing them between seasons). I feel like deleting them but every time I feel trash about my writing I feel better looking at the comments.

One of these days...

The image used in this secret resonated too hard lol. But man, abandoned fics marked as complete always feels like a slap across the heart (especially if I was invested).
