That just makes me think you have bad media literacy.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP

I admit anytime I see the phrase "media literacy" I think of news comprehension. Thus I am taken aback seeing it used in this context.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Media literacy has long been used, first in academic circles, then in more popular and fandom spaces, to relate to the way in which you view and analyze media and the beliefs and conclusions you take from it.

I didn't ship it, Meg/Castiel--Megstiel--was my jam, but I was still disappointed at how half-hearted Cas's "confession" to Dean was. Misha put his whole pussy into that scene, but Jensen played it too... straight, for the lack of a better word.

I know others saw it that way too and it's valid, but I admit I don't quite share your interpretation of Dean's reaction to Cas's confession of love. It was not indifference to me, it was shock: both at Cas'confession of deep love (which could difficulty be interpreted as anything but romantic to me, as explained by a comment below: his platonic love was already known and reciprocated by Dean, which only left a romantic confession on the table) and at Cas explaining that giving this confession was signing his, this time probably permanent and Dean knew it, immediate death warrant.

How would you react if your best friend both confessed they were in love with you in a way that touched on all of your insecurities (In a good way. As in "You always thought you were bad in that way, but in fact, you're not at all and I think you're wonderful") and that they were going to die in a few seconds as a result? I think I would be lost for words too and would probably have a "neutral" expression on my face due to feeling like a "404 error system".

And let's not forget how Dean reacted right after Cas'death, and after he (Dean) had a little time to (barely) process the former's confession and then death. He slumped down on the floor, hiding his face into his head (a clear acting choice to show his anguish, IMO) and, more importantly, ignoring Sam's call in one of the most desperate situations they ever have been in (and it's saying something). Sam, who is possibly the most important person in his life! Dean has always taken Cas dying hard, but this time it was on another level to me, and demonstrates how affected he was by Cas'confession. Sidenote: apparently, Jensen's reaction in other takes was a lot more dramatic (or it might have been the editing?).

That doesn't mean he reciprocated the feeling, but it doesn't mean he didn't either. In the end, I don't see his initial "non" reaction (which, to me, was a reaction in and on itself. He didn't make a joke nor did he try to deflect or anything like that) as proof of his heterosexuality or of his rejection of Cas'feelings.

SA: by the editing, I mean they cut it in a way that toned down Dean's reaction.

I see your points and agree with them more than I don't.

Still, I think it would have been refreshing if the scene played out not necessarily more romantically, but with a touch more intimacy on Dean's part.

AYRT Coulnd't agree more with you!

I used to ship it really hard in the days of yore~ and I had a fandom friend send this to me like 'omg you'll love this!!!' and I was so... underwhelmed, lol. For all the ways I'd have liked some kind of Dean/Cas moment go this was not it, Misha did fine but the lack of anything on Jensen's end made it look like the most awkward one-sided confession ever.

I'd have been so mad if I still shipped it as hard as I did, as it was I laughed at it, shared some of the memes and then moved on. It wasn't anything to get hyped about.

I don’t go here, but I read an interesting Tumblr post where the poster shipped it but her ex-boyfriend didn’t. The ex didn’t think they worked as a ship because they both cared about fulfilling their individual goals more than they cared about each other.

I'd definitely say that Dean was that way. But I'd say Castiel sacrificed a lot for Dean.

Not in the fandom, but that art is lovely!

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The scene was so disappointing ’cause here’s Cas pouring his heart out to Dean and Dean’s just :|. But it’s hard not to read it as romantic on Cas’s part because he’d already told Dean (and Sam) he loved them like family and he already knew Dean loved him like a brother, so why would his happiness be telling Dean he loves him?

i felt it was explicitly romantic on Cas part, and ambiguous on Dean's (I lean toward platonic, only because Dean has such a reckless disregard for Cas as an equal that I can't see his reaction, deep though it may have been, as romantically loving in a way that feels good to me.)
