I have a friend that will not do things they are bad at or have no hope of improving to be better at. I'm a shit artist and I have been for years with zero signs of improvement, but I still enjoy puttering around with different painting mediums. Lately I've been on a watercolors kick.

I feel this! My whole extended family on one side is like this. The family joke is we got the passion, just not the talent. Tone deaf as heck but a love of songs and singing.

Right there with you.

I had a magical moment in college where I had a friend who would get drunk with me and we would belt out songs awfully together.

I’ve never been in such a judgement-free singing environment again. But singing alone at home or in a car comes close and is pretty fun.

No, and I don't think this will change anytime soon. I'd rather spend the time and emotional energy working on activities where I already have some established competence.

I can't sing well, I still like to sing when I'm on my own just jamming to some music at home. Only me and the walls can hear how bad I am.

Short answer: sure

Long answer: I enjoy casually doing plenty of things I'm bad at. When/where I do them depends, though. Like, I don't enjoy doing them in a competitive context.

oh hell yeah. life is too short to NOT try, even if it's a half-assed try. plus its nice to know i'm not alone when i share in my bad pursuits.

a lot of people are happy to share their knowledge on how to improve besides, so it's a bonus to never give up, in a fandom context :3

This is me with embroidery so far. The finished product will look fine from a distance, I think. I’m having fun.

I like writing fic, especially PWP. Haven't had the energy or inspiration in a while. But I miss it. Even though my fics weren't so good.

Singing. Not bad, but not great. But I love it anyway.

Depends. If i have my own personal goal that i can succeed at then yes i enjoy it. i like painting not because i'm any good, but because i like putting colors on canvas, and i can't fail at that lol. if its a goal i can't succeed at, then no. if it's going to take me 30 hours to get past a level in a video game with tips, easy levels, and walkthroughs, and i can't even do anything else in the game, i'm quitting.

There is a small number of things I'm even decent at, the rest I'm incredibly incompetent at, but I still have a blast with my hobbies.
Some of those include: singing, dancing, tai chi, Russian language learning (I'm fluent in 3 languages and I've been studying Russian as a hobby for more than a decade now but proficiency wise I'm still a beginner lol such an embarrassment), jewel making, journaling/collages, Japanese calligraphy, drawing and watercolour painting (these last two I'm actively trying to improve though)...
If I didn't enjoy things I'm bad at I'd been living a very sad life. I have no talent for anything and I'm of average intelligence. My only saving grace is my never ending curiosity!
I actually enjoy being shit at stuff with no shame and then sometimes slowly see improvement in certain crafts of my choice. I was a perfectionist in my youth, but now that I'm in my middle 30s I just don't give a fuck any more. Life is too short. I'm gonna sing off key and draw a silly horribly proportionate comic if I want to.
