Inspired by ^ What are your opinions on fandom getting exposure?

With the secrets the last few days on fic binding on Etsy or wherever, and Goodreads reviews for fics, what is your opinion and/or experience regarding fanfic/fandom entering more in the mainstream? Things like fanfiction getting exposed on websites not pertaining to fandom? Other instances that have made you pause?

Part of me wishes fic were normalized. The other part is selfish and wish it'd be an underground thing again, and the secret asshole part of me thinks the normies don't understand it, can't really appreciate it for what it is and therefore don't deserve any part of it.

I cringe if I hear about it in the mainstream, because I don't know if newer folk who wander in intend to shut shit down with their purity bullshit or not. And I hate that this bothers me because I'm usually the first to say people should have fun. But that's it - not knowing if we'll get that courtesy back.

I don't love it nectar I liked having a secret (if stigmatised) hobby.

But mainstreaming is what it is. People have always had a back and forth relationship with media, and that relationship has understandably become more well known as the internet grew.

I don't like it - not because I want fandom to be a sekrit speshul klub, but because I don't really want fandom to be subject to interrogation and speculation from people who firmly place themselves as outside it and therefore "superior". It happens now, but I can imagine it getting a lot nastier.
