It's on the internet. It's publically available. So what if someone writes an article about fic with links?

Well, it brings more attention to it. I'm not worried about most people who didn't know it existed before - a lot won't care, and some others will probably be into it - but, there's always the possibility of people who will start a moral crusade against it (think of the children). Moral crusaders like that are always annoying, but sometimes dangerous. Then there are the IP holders who are aware of it and mostly just tolerate it (instead of being fine with it and or even encouraging it, like some), which is easier for them to do, the less attention it gets. Fanfic exists in a bit of legal gray area and I think that most IP holders don't think it's worth the legal fees to pursue it, but I don't think that will necessarily go for all IP holders forever.

It is possible fanfic will just end up more mainstream and commonplace. Given how weirdly het up people can get about things, I don't think that's in any way a foregone conclusion. I live in a state that just went back to a law about abortion from 1864. 1864. There are some egregiously unhinged people out there and some of them are in charge of stuff.
