I table in many Artist Alleys and although the people who do original stuff do sell well, it's no where compared to what Fanart and fandom-related stuff sells. Especially when it comes to things like comics. Yes, people like pretty art, but it's a lot easier to sell pretty art of something they recognize. (And fantasy art tends to have a lot of recognizable tropes, even if not from a specific fandom. A fan who likes LotR will probably like most art that has elves, Tolkien or not)
