TBH, OP raises a valid point.
The counter to this argument is often that people need the money, but nobody ever seems to ask why do you need to profit from a hobby in the first place and what it implies about the current state of things.

Genuinely understand the frustration, tbh. But I never cared. Many people are struggling, and it's not many people who are willing to buy new original stuff (outside the furry fandom and alike.) If you got people who are willing to pay you to write about their fave or buy something like a keychain of then, and need the money....

Besides, imo, beats buying dry official merch at times.

All this cry babying about turning your hobby into a viable income, something that is really nobody's business, is really just one of two things. It's jealousy because the people complaining know they could never make money off their fanfiction because the interest isn't there. So why should anyone one else? Or it's entitlement because you know if it catches on, you'll get access to less free content. But piracy will always exist so this seems like an unnecessary worry.
And the arguments that claims it will bring the wrath of copyright holders down upon all of us and kill fanfiction: No, it fucking won't. If that were the case, fanart would have died out decades ago. And everyone seems to forget the fanfiction that was published in old magazines that people HAD TO PAY FOR. Just shut the fuck up. You sound stupid.

As expected people are going at you but I agree. I don't exactly care if you steal from the Mouse but selling your fanart/fic/etc is still stealing. And I do care when it happens to indie creators. So you are struggling fan? Do you think they are not?
Also I don't exactly care if people sell their fandom craft once in a while. But doing it for a living? What the point of a hobby when?

I especially side eye it when people make content of popular franchises when they were asked not to like the Baldur's Gate 3 fandom for example. Going against the creators' wishes while profiting of it doesn't seem very fan friendly to me.

Okay, there is nuance here but this still feels off to me. Like "disabled characters are not going to be able to accomplish the tasks done by protagonists in the type of stories I enjoy" makes sense for certain disabilities for some characters. Like sure maybe the main characters of an action thing aren't gonna have major physical disabilities, not saying they have to. That doesn't mean that there can't be side characters who do, or they can't have non-physical disabilities. (Or the major characters could have physical disabilities ANYWAY and it can make the story more interesting bc you get to explore how they deal with that. I'm just saying, there are options, genre doesn't necessitate the nonexistence of disabled people.)

And "either magic/technology should be available to fix the problem in that setting so why is it still there OR the setting is not set up to accommodate the needs of someone with a major disability and they're not going to functionally exist at all" I don't really get how you can say this and act like eugenics is irrelevant to the conversation. IRL, people have been helping other people with disabilities survive since we were hunter gatherers, so like being in a harsh survival situation doesn't mean there aren't disabled people. A setting that ACTIVELY prevents disabled people from existing is one that's doing eugenics. If there's magic/technology to fix physical problems, that's a bit different, but there are people who are considered disabled now who wouldn't want their bodies/brains altered. Like, if a setting canonically has no autistic people because they're all cured now, that is in fact, bad and horrifying. And I think even with that kind of thing there are interesting stories to be told about the details of it, what happens if the technology breaks down, how does the magic create weird new problems, etc.

Sorry for wall of text, I'm not saying that every story has to fill a disability representation quota. I don't actually give a shit if a given fantasy story doesn't have any disabled characters. I'm just annoyed at the idea that disabled people don't/shouldn't have a place in a whole-ass genre of fiction.

Maybe there ought to be a fanfiction of it, maybe in the way If the Emperor Had a Text-To-Speech Device did. Because if the Imperium ever found any Star Trek episodes, it would be classified as heresy on the spot. If not by xenos, then by the fact there is actual hope in it.

Hmm, idk, I feel like it's less creativity, more making the rest of it high quality enough that other people give a fuck? Like, I think more people are able come up with characters and ideas that would be interesting in the right hands than to write the kinda story that actually gets people invested who weren't already, if that makes sense.
