TBH, OP raises a valid point.
The counter to this argument is often that people need the money, but nobody ever seems to ask why do you need to profit from a hobby in the first place and what it implies about the current state of things.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we all need money to live, though?

I don't care for people monetizing a free hobby either.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought things were all hunkydory?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. These days there are a million and one different ways to make money from home on your own time that don't involve fandom at all.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay.

Get used to way less free fanworks, then. Much less covers, much less video essays, much less fanart, etc. People just won't have the time to do it.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You were never entitled to people's times beforehand, tbh, and free fanworks aren't going away. People still make then, if anything, we have a lot more access to it now than before.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's ok. Either we are doing this hobby or don't

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. I never had the urge to profit off of my fanworks.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Amazing how Japanese fandom is absolutely bustling when it's an understood cultural rule there that you don't profit off fanworks...

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
???? Japanese fandom also make occasional profit off fan works?? I've already seen them sell doujinshis and commissions already before. I've got them before too.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but yeah, I was gonna say doujinshis are a thing. Wondering if ayrt was being sarcastic though.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Doujinshi aren't for profit, they generally cost 200-500 yen which usually just covers the cost of printing them and then the table at whatever event they're selling them at. If the artists do make any sort of profit we're talking about the equivalent of probably pennies per book.

The last doujinshi I bought from an event was 240 yen. That's $1.55. There's zero appreciable profit to be had in that.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh okay, gotcha.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
doujinshi market is not for profit, though. they are a self sustained market. people usually do a little profit out of their doujinshi so they can re-invest the money into other people's fanworks. printing out doujinshi and collecting them is a hobby, not a way to make profit.
the people doing doujinshi or commissions for profits are very rare.
it's very different from all those westerner people advertising their commission slots on SNS because they "need money". completely different mindset. (not to say one is wrong and one is right. it's just different)

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Japanese artists do take commissions for profit, but they generally won't do it for fandom stuff - they do original characters only. All of the Japanese artists I follow have that rule when they offer commissions.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
AYART
yes, absolutely. i forgot to stress out the "fandom" part.
there is a lot of people doing original commissions, hentai especially. you can easily find them through pixiv. some people even publish non-fandom doujinshi that are pretty lucrative.
please read my comment above as entirely about derivative fanworks, not original indipendent works. that has totally different vibes, rules and market value.

For the record, I'm talking about how cost of living increased but wages didn't and hustle culture escaped containment, encouraging people to monetize every idle moment of their lives. I'm not lamenting people making money off their hobby, rather the fact they were driven to in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
tHeY ShOuLd jUsT GeT AnOtHeR JoB.

A few people on here think that everything is going swell with the world and anyone who needs extra money should just uproot their lives and get one of those "better" jobs just floating free for the taking...somewhere. I've yet to figure that part out. I'm sure they'll be right over here to shame me for calling them out on their hypocritical bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody here is saying that, but you're free to draw that conclusion.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, this was from several days ago, when I commented that I was tired and working sucked. Everyone said I should just find another job, oh if you need more money just find a job that pays more, oh it sounds like your boss sucks, you should get a better job. Sure, I'll get right down to the job farm, idiots. When I mentioned that everyone I know was in the same boat, they accused me of saying everyone in the world felt this way and THEY didn't (they love their job!!211! they love working all day!!@!!!) so obviously I'm projecting my completely irrational and individual feelings. I even found stats pointing to the cost of living crisis, and they just ignored them because they're fine, so it must be me that's the problem. Didn't stop to think that maybe they're the odd ones out.

Just what I needed when I said I was fucking tired. Yes, I'm still salty about it, because what the fuck is wrong with these people?

"anyone who needs extra money should just uproot their lives and get one of those "better" jobs just floating free for the taking...somewhere"

You mean like the WFH jobs that two of my friends have gotten in the past month alone?
