Okay.

Get used to way less free fanworks, then. Much less covers, much less video essays, much less fanart, etc. People just won't have the time to do it.

You were never entitled to people's times beforehand, tbh, and free fanworks aren't going away. People still make then, if anything, we have a lot more access to it now than before.

That's ok. Either we are doing this hobby or don't

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. I never had the urge to profit off of my fanworks.

Amazing how Japanese fandom is absolutely bustling when it's an understood cultural rule there that you don't profit off fanworks...

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
???? Japanese fandom also make occasional profit off fan works?? I've already seen them sell doujinshis and commissions already before. I've got them before too.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but yeah, I was gonna say doujinshis are a thing. Wondering if ayrt was being sarcastic though.

Doujinshi aren't for profit, they generally cost 200-500 yen which usually just covers the cost of printing them and then the table at whatever event they're selling them at. If the artists do make any sort of profit we're talking about the equivalent of probably pennies per book.

The last doujinshi I bought from an event was 240 yen. That's $1.55. There's zero appreciable profit to be had in that.

Ahhh okay, gotcha.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
doujinshi market is not for profit, though. they are a self sustained market. people usually do a little profit out of their doujinshi so they can re-invest the money into other people's fanworks. printing out doujinshi and collecting them is a hobby, not a way to make profit.
the people doing doujinshi or commissions for profits are very rare.
it's very different from all those westerner people advertising their commission slots on SNS because they "need money". completely different mindset. (not to say one is wrong and one is right. it's just different)

Japanese artists do take commissions for profit, but they generally won't do it for fandom stuff - they do original characters only. All of the Japanese artists I follow have that rule when they offer commissions.

AYART
yes, absolutely. i forgot to stress out the "fandom" part.
there is a lot of people doing original commissions, hentai especially. you can easily find them through pixiv. some people even publish non-fandom doujinshi that are pretty lucrative.
please read my comment above as entirely about derivative fanworks, not original indipendent works. that has totally different vibes, rules and market value.
