it's not many people who are willing to buy new original stuff

Completely untrue. I have one friend who makes a lot of money doing pet portraits and another friend who sells original fantasy-style art and also does commissions of people's tabletop characters. There's very much a large market out there for that kind of thing.

I supplement my living selling stuff I see or embroider. The amount of original works I see at craft fairs and the weekly swap meet is staggering. The arts are truly alive and the people are buying.

Yeah, my friend who does the original fantasy art gets tables in artist's alleys at cons and sells a ton of stuff there even though none of it is fandom-related. People like pretty art, period.

I table in many Artist Alleys and although the people who do original stuff do sell well, it's no where compared to what Fanart and fandom-related stuff sells. Especially when it comes to things like comics. Yes, people like pretty art, but it's a lot easier to sell pretty art of something they recognize. (And fantasy art tends to have a lot of recognizable tropes, even if not from a specific fandom. A fan who likes LotR will probably like most art that has elves, Tolkien or not)
