At the very least, I don't think any fan or the show's writers themselves would argue that the sword-pulling animation is really cool-looking.

You might like the manga Shitsurakuen. It has a very Utena-like protagonist who fights to protect lots of girls who are actually happy to have her do it, and one girl in particular could be considered the main "princess" who's interested in her. There is the caveat that the reason for all this is that their school is ruled by cartoonishly misogynistic boys and that's a whole thing, but if you don't mind that, check it out.
