Same here. I actually really like Michael's character, but the whole show is just a chore to get through.

I actually do like characters! But it's exactly such a chore. Also the whole 800 years in the future plot annoyed me too much

I haven't watched beyond S4 E1 yet. Too many explosions. I'm assuming it doesn't get better.

My partner really likes it. She's watched all the seasons and is excited about a new one. She never watched Star Trek before Discovery, but has since watched Picard and that other new one (not the cartoon). So I guess it was for her?

I think you’re right. Discovery is a new kind of Trek that wasn’t made for Trekkies. Paramount even alluded to that in the original marketing. Picard was an attempt to bring the TNG fans back into the fold and then Strange New Worlds (the other new one that isn’t the cartoon) was meant to be a bit of something for all Trekkies past and present. They really missed the mark on some things but despite NuTrek really not being my thing, they got a lot more right across the shows than longtime fans give them credit for.
