I'm old enough to remember when copyright claims weren't all over the goddamn place. I miss being able to show my music videos, even if they weren't that good.

You know what I miss? The straight-up vloggers who used to be on there, sharing their thoughts and lives because they wanted to connect, not because they wanted to "produce content." I remember following this 80-something year old man who would post his recollections of WWII, and this other guy called urgelt who would read poems and talk about nutrition in a super soothing voice.

I also miss the old weird-ass comedians who'd show up on there, like that woman who would take bites out of deodorant.

I think those people are on TikTok somewhere, but the algorithm makes it hard to find them.

Related, but I just miss the internet where people were just sharing their passion or lives or thoughts just for funsies not for profit.

I have a Big Problem with youtube, and maybe I'll tell you what it is about twenty-five minutes in to this thirty minute video. First, like and subscribe, then listen to me read out an ad for a product no one has ever purchased...

Let me tell you about The Raid, Shadow Legends...

I kind of feel like YouTube is what you make it. Yes, some videos have way too many ads. But if you want anime with pop songs and passion projects, I'm pretty sure those are there. The types of things you watch a lot will pop up in your page. At least that's the way the algorithm seems to work for me - watch funny videos of animals and babies -> get lots of videos on my page with animals and/or babies, watch a Taskmaster video -> get more Taskmaster videos, watch a crack 9-1-1 show fanvid -> get other crack 9-1-1 fanvids or 9-1-1 clips, watch a movie trailer for a faith-based movie -> get other faith-based movies (yeah, that was a mistake, I didn't realize what the movie was until near the end of the trailer).

ehhh...you can curate to a point (and delete mistakes from your history to hopefully get that shit to stop showing up) but youtube is starting to really just promote whatever's getting hits, regardless of what you've ever searched or have in your watch history. I have NEVER watched anything gaming-related and yet I get let's players recced. I have never in my life wanted to watch a 10 hour loop of cozy jazz lofi anything but I get ten of them in my feed every night. let's not even touch on the gross far-right bait that shows up no matter how left and gay your history is! as far as I can tell the only way to fully curate is to subscribe to everything even slightly of interest to you and then only use your subscriptions feed to find "new" stuff. not a fail-proof but you'd also never find a new rabbit hole to go down.

The AMVs aren't. They get copyright claimed within seconds.

Yeah, I miss when people were just doing things for fandom/fun...and not chasing trends to gain clout in order to make money because this is a bu-si-ness
