Have You Ever Had a Secret Fandom?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-26 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever been in a fandom that you would never tell anyone about or would be considered as a 'red flag' in your current fan spaces?
Or even fandoms you have regretted ever being a part of ages ago and would never tell anyone about?

Most of them.

The only socially acceptable fandoms are sports, politics, and religion. All the others, I keep to myself.

South Park is a big one. I sometimes lurk in from time to time just to see what's happening because I actually do want to know if the series will ever be finished. I still miss writing fics about the goth gang, but not enough to go back and catch up (I think I left around the time they changed the story format for streaming service - and mostly to watch the Creek episode because someone I use to follow on Tumblr had submitted their fan art for the episode).

Also Loveless. As a teen going through some messed up stuff with family and a really sadistic bully who thankfully ended up leaving my school, it was weirdly comforting despite a lot of the dark themes in the story.
Now I don't think I would ever want to explain all that in any further detail to anyone, especially now that I'm an adult.

Oh, all the time. I try to avoid crossing the streams.

All Fandoms are Secret Fandoms

At least to the general public.

But yes, I have dabbled in fandoms that I wouldn't admit to my fellow fandom nerds. Mostly just reading gossip and a few fic, I don't think I've ever been All In for a fandom I wouldn't admit to among fandom spaces.

Not secret per se, but the last few years I've been into some ships that do make me feel a bit self-conscious, like I should have side-blogs for them (except I always forget to use my side blog if I have one).

Like, I'm sorry to my fellow shippers of the maladjusted space fascists for all of the teenager-mentee/forty-something-mentor content. And I'm sorry to all my fellow teenage-mentee/forty-something-mentor shippers for all the maladjusted space fascists content. *laughs nervously*

I want you to know it took me reading through this three times to realize you were not in fact shipping a teenage manatee in space.

I did not even doubt the first time, just chalked it up to another random fandom I did not know about.

AYRT - Lol! Now I'm picturing a 90's style cereal mascot of a "teenage manatee" in like, a baggy graphic tee, riding a hoverboard or something. XD

Nope. I'm too old for that shit. The haters can die mad about it.

Oh boy yes.

When I was writing 'Titanic' fic in the late '90s? Definitely kept that under the rug.

Didn't let people know how insane I was about 'Dark Angel.' In fact, sometimes I publicly pretended to hate it in order to throw people off the scent.

Ain't nobody know that I shipped Booker/Elizabeth. And ain't nobody ever going to.

I was so into Dark Angel but never really thought to check out the fandom. It is actually a show I've been thinking about recently and wondering about how it would hold up to a rewatch!

The fandom was super fun during the first season! Lots of great fansites, with a lively writing community. I made some wonderful friends during that time.

During the second season, however, the ship war that developed between Max/Alec and Max/Logan fans cast a bit of a pall over everything. Rival sites sprung up, and when their members met on neutral ground, they were not shy about expressing their hatred for one another (and for either Michael Weatherly or Jensen Ackles, depending which side they were on. Oddly, a vocal contingent of Max/Alec shippers also hated Jessica Alba, and mocked her for being troublingly thin).

On the positive side, a bunch of folks who got sick of the in-fighting eventually created a multishipper hang-out called The Broken World. Fabulous place, that. I loved the people there.

Across fandoms? Nah, nothing really to hide, we're all fucking weird.

IRL though, I'd talk about media but I sure as hell wouldn't disclose anything about fandom (from fanworks to in-depth discussions to wank) unless I knew the other person were a level of fan safe talking to.

Probably bandom ‘cause RPF’s a big no-no in pretty much all my current fandoms.

While I only follow very chill and nice people in it, I wouldn't go out of my way to mention in other fandom spaces that I'm in the Genshin Impact fandom. Mainly because the number of antis is super high in this one and I don't want to be associated with them.

I haven't noticed the antis but I mostly read fic on AO3 so not much interaction.
