I have idly wondered how the YOI fandom handles the war on Ukraine in the past. I always assumed badly.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They just don't mention it in fic. It's like any fic that just ignores period accurate views on homosexuality or race. I know of one AU that addresses it and it does address it A LOT. But that is the only one.

Genuinely, I think I prefer that.

I was afraid there would be cringey soapboxing or unrealistic heroics by the Russian characters.

Do you wonder how fandoms for America based media handle all the wars the US is involved in? How about all the school shootings? The abortions bans? Pretty sure you don't.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. You know some fics do address school shootings if the main characters are school-age.

In the real world Viktor would be dead, in prison, or trying to claim political asylum in another country. But, in the fanfic world most people ignore the state sanctioned homophobia just like the ignore all the American stuff you mention.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Then what makes you think the war in Ukraine would be treated differently? It's just... weird.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think I am op??

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, yeah but apparently not. No indication in your posts, how the hell should I know.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I didn't say op or ayrt or anything.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people don't.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
In fact most people only specify when they're NOT OP or ayrt.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-28 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I don't have to wonder that because most of these things are ongoing issues that existed before the fandom existed, so I already know the answer if I read the fics. Though most settings are vague enough that for example, it's a made-up or unnamed highschool somewhere in [general US area] whereas YOI very specifically is about a legendary Russian gay figure skater with massive clout in his homeland.

If the fandom was set in a specific, real life high school in the current time, and said high school went through a school shooting IRL, I would wonder if the fandom acknowledged that. The same way I wondered how the appeal of don't ask don't tell would influence the slash fic in a military based show I was into at the time. But even if none of the above were true, I'm not sure what argument you're trying to make, bonny.

*Nonny, instead of bonny at the end there. Stupid autocorrect, I swear it only triggers to mess up words that were actually correct.
