I have idly wondered how the YOI fandom handles the war on Ukraine in the past. I always assumed badly.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They just don't mention it in fic. It's like any fic that just ignores period accurate views on homosexuality or race. I know of one AU that addresses it and it does address it A LOT. But that is the only one.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuinely, I think I prefer that.

I was afraid there would be cringey soapboxing or unrealistic heroics by the Russian characters.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you wonder how fandoms for America based media handle all the wars the US is involved in? How about all the school shootings? The abortions bans? Pretty sure you don't.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. You know some fics do address school shootings if the main characters are school-age.

In the real world Viktor would be dead, in prison, or trying to claim political asylum in another country. But, in the fanfic world most people ignore the state sanctioned homophobia just like the ignore all the American stuff you mention.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Then what makes you think the war in Ukraine would be treated differently? It's just... weird.

OP

I don't have to wonder that because most of these things are ongoing issues that existed before the fandom existed, so I already know the answer if I read the fics. Though most settings are vague enough that for example, it's a made-up or unnamed highschool somewhere in [general US area] whereas YOI very specifically is about a legendary Russian gay figure skater with massive clout in his homeland.

If the fandom was set in a specific, real life high school in the current time, and said high school went through a school shooting IRL, I would wonder if the fandom acknowledged that. The same way I wondered how the appeal of don't ask don't tell would influence the slash fic in a military based show I was into at the time. But even if none of the above were true, I'm not sure what argument you're trying to make, bonny.

*Nonny, instead of bonny at the end there. Stupid autocorrect, I swear it only triggers to mess up words that were actually correct.

God I do to see it though

Odds are they're American.

Lol. Missed the word "want"
Anyway, it really could have been a great movie and would annoy my darling government so much, but alas.

"Barely broke even"

Love or hate YOI, this is a blatant lie. It was literally the studio's highest grossing series ever.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not for the studio it wasn't. And that is what matters if you want a sequel.

That sounds like it's on the studio for making such a bad deal that they would barely get paid even if the series was a record-breaking success (which it was). And considering Mappa doesn't make anime for free, they probably got paid up front for creating the show so 'broke even' doesn't really apply. They would have gotten paid more than it cost to make the show (otherwise they wouldn't have made it at all) so it was always going to break even regardless, they were never taking a loss.

You--you do know YoI is literally the fifth highest selling series of all time, right? And the highest selling series of the year it came out (and if you add all anime of that year, beaten only by Your Name)? That the first volume outsold JJK's first volume by almost double? That it is literally still Mappa's highest grossing series to date? If that's 'barely broke even' I don't know what you consider a success.

I wasn’t surprised it got canceled. Bitterly disappointed, yes, but not surprised. And even though there are lot of rumors floating around, I really do think it boiled down to money (YOI made a lot of money, but as mentioned above, MAPPA didn’t receive a huge cut of it) and possibly Covid. The political climate probably wasn’t even a factor. At least the anime had a nice ending.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-28 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the conspiracy theories about politics or homophobia (or misogyny, as I've heard some posit -- that studios would rather see something successful die because women dared to like it). None of them have any basis beyond speculation and it seems like fans are just looking for a morally righteous reason to be upset about the cancellation. As if it's not okay to just be upset for the normal reasons.
