From what I remember of the fanbase back in the Watcher jump over none of them really seemed to like Steven, tolerated at best imo, so I think this just gave a subset of fans the perfect opportunity to dump on a guy they've never liked to begin with while completely forgetting that all three of them would have agreed to this.

It's not new, certain fans can't seem to view their favorite creators/celebs as people and will pedestal them as if they're perfect creations or something. And Ryan and Shane def had that 'wholesome ghoul bois' parasocial thing from their BFU days that fans put on them, while Steven was just... there.

I think this new move of theirs, while understandable from a creative ownership perspective makes sense, was really quite dumb but I don't hate them for it. They just monumentally overestimated how willing most of the fans would be to pay for their content, but hey maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't.
