Music and identity are often closely tied together, it’s been that way at least for the last 70 years. Not listening to music by artists who are ideologically opposites is a pretty normal thing.

Pity your friend turned out to be a piece of shit though.

I think some exceptions can be made. As much as I can't stand Lee Greenwood as a person, I still have a soft spot for "God Bless the USA", as it's a song my special ed ASL chorus performed when I was a kid. It was a song we got to perform a fair amount, and it made us happy to be on stage. Even after all these years I have nostalgia tied to that song.
