What do you like to wear when hiking and where do you get your hiking clothes?

I am in need of some new tops and I always struggle because I prefer long tops but I also have a weird long torso so just finding regular tops that cover my stomach is tough.

(Also, PCT!anon I forget when you were planning to go but I've been thinking of you and hoping the trip happens and goes well!)

And more to the point, would you rather encounter a man or a bear in the woods?

Jeans and shirt work for me.

Oh jeez I cannot imagine hiking in jeans. So uncomfortable and hot. More power to you.

I’m super jealous tbh <3 I get too hot and sweaty and it’s all just so heavy after a while.

Leggings and sunshirts are my go to! I get whatever cheap leggings with pockets I can find on Amazon. I love the sun hoodies by Outdoor Research and you can find them from the REI used section or Backcountry for great prices. The ones I get aren’t especially long but maybe some of the others are, even if it’s a different brand? Hiking tops tend to be longer than regular tops though.

I wear either toe socks or toe sock liners (injinji for both) and have never gotten another blister since adding them to my wardrobe. Shoes are a bit more of a personal thing, it depends on your feet’s needs. I do fine with Merrell trail runners so don’t have to splash out for more specialized footwear.

And hopefully this isn’t TMI:
Bamboo or merino wool underwear, or go commando. I use Boody bamboo briefs (they’re actually closer to a bikini cut than brief). I also tried exofficio but wasn’t impressed. For anything over 3-4 miles I have to go commando or I will get painful chafing.

Hanes makes a seamless synthetic material sports bra that’s to die for! I can’t remember the name when buying in the store (some Walmarts carry it) but here’s an Amazon link that sadly doesn’t have the exact name the manufacturer uses: https://a.co/d/7irheBv
I love this bra because I’m too big to go without but on regular bras my backpack and the strap adjusters are a toxic mix. Same with the closure in back. Even with regular sports bras the seams can be an issue if I’m carrying a heavy pack, plus they tend to kinda pull my shoulders forward and lead to muscle soreness.

I have a very similar bras but with the reg closures (but like 3 or 4 hooks instead of the average 2). Very comfy. My pack has this "air flow" feature where it arcs away from my back so that has helped a bunnnch with the bra chafing problem.

Aw thank you <3 I don’t know yet if I’ll make it this year. I can’t afford a new tent and backpack and mine weigh ten lbs D; I asked my parents for help and they said yes but it won’t be for a couple months. With the lead times to get the new gear and annual vacation cutoff at the end of September…who knows. I’ll be all set for next year though if I can’t go in August or September this year! And I’m super lucky to have parents who can help! I’m doing a section hike of the Superior Hiking Trail later this month with one of my dogs. Northern terminus to Grand Mariaris (I really need to learn how to spell and pronounce that) with ten pounds of tent and backpack plus everything else to sustain us when I have no idea how long it will take us lmao I guess my comfort zone is being out of my comfort zone!
I hope you find some comfy clothes <3 I’m all about the Echo hoodie since getting one a month ago. Oh and if you ever want a little pick me up on the trail, Ultra Gam has the cutest and coolest gaiters! I can’t say how long lasting they are because I just got mine but the sizing was perfect and they are so stinking cute, I seriously was just staring at them and smiling the whole hike this weekend. I got camping Bigfoot but I saw at least four more patterns I want lol
