What do you suppose that would do to the kids whose parents regret having them?

You mean the ones who already suspect their parents regret them, or the ones who have somehow blissfully failed to pick up on it?

Because it would vary from person to person. If the parent was a complete asshole, maybe the kid would see this as an opportunity to set themselves free from a toxic situation. If the parent regretted having the kid but still did their best to raise the kid and make the kid feel wanted, it might sting but maybe something could be salvaged. Or not. In any case, maybe the kid would rethink whether or not they wanted kids themselves and go into the situation better prepared.

Da

I think it would be extremely hurtful to almost all of them

We can tell when our parents regret us, you know.

I extremely do not think it is the case that every child who is regretted by their parents knows this

I am sorry if you do

OP

I think that if the parent(s) handle this situation with time and care the kids can take it reasonably well. We're already starting to hear from these kids, at least a little bit. So far, it's been not as damaging as expected as long as it's clear what the parent actually regrets.

If it stops being taboo, nobody's going to bother with time and care. The fact that it needs time and care is part of why it's taboo.

OP

I'd say at this stage it definitely needs time and care. That said, I also think it's possible that this necessity would only be temporary. After a while, there's a good chance it won't matter as much.
