I’ve run into both. I’d choose the bear every single time. Because the man was the only other person for about 12 miles in any direction, he got more agitated by my polite rebuffs and redirections when he asked which campsite I was headed to, he started yelling and cursing at me, and it was only because of bad weather that he finally left me alone and headed in the opposite direction. I hardly slept that night for fear he’d come back.

The bear just ran away when I called out to it. It was just wandering through its home and smelled something unusual so went to investigate. It stepped into my campsite about 100 feet away from me and we both froze, then I called out hello while walking backwards and it turned and ran off. It was more exciting than frightening. I got to see a bear! They’re incredible! And apparently no more a fan of the Folgers instant coffee I was trialling than I was.

I forgot to mention that when I stoped in to report the man at the ranger’s station, the ranger was unwilling to take a report but she did make a ton of excuses for his behavior and said I probably misunderstood his intentions. She kinda handwaved the fact he was shouting and cursing at the end, she told me he was probably just scared because of the approaching storm.
I have no idea if it’s the same guy or not but a man did rape a solo camper at a state park a couple hours away about a month later. They didn’t catch the guy. That park is close to where the man I met said he lived.
