The man vs bear thing is so fucking stuoid and makes me angry. OF COURSE I'd rather run into/be alone in the woods with a man. Bears are fucking scary! I get what they were trying to say with the whole thought exercise but they failed. Its a stupid comparison.

They only kill fewer people because statistically you have a lesser chance of encountering one because you rarely go into their environment. If you even the odds and place a random man and a random bear in a room with you, you are much more likely to be attacked by the bear.

But that part of the discourse just proves why the discourse is stupid: it never had any chance in hell of getting the underlying point across to the people it was aimed at.

The response of shitty men has not been, "hmm, I guess I should self-reflect;" it's been, "lmao fellas so as we've been saying, women are children."

I mean, feel free to think that but in general, the whole "rape is a fate worse than death" thing is pretty screwed and disrespectful towards survivors.

If I run into a bear in the woods I can just move away until it leaves or make noises to scare it off. People will also believe me that I was mauled by a bear. If I run into a man in the woods there's a higher chance the man will ...follow me. Most people won't believe me if I survive that encounter.

I feel safer with the bear.

Have you ever actually been around a bear? Have you been hiking alone and encountered a bear? Or a man? There is absolutley not a higher chance the man will follow you or attack you. I've encountered a lot of men while hiking and camping alone and not a single one followed me or threatened me in any way, but I have been followed by a bear. It was terrifying.

It depends so much on the specific circumstances though. What kind of bear, what kind of circumstances. If it's a random bear in most of North America, you can probably just back away slowly and get out of there and it's not going to aggressively come after you.

Never heard of this until now, but I'd definitely prefer to be alone with a man than a bear in the woods, I'm confident I could defend myself against more men than bears!

See the bears where I grew up are WAY less scary to me than a man. I'm a trans guy in a place where I don't pass as a man but unless I lean into full drag, I don't look like a straight woman, either, I just look queer and disabled. That makes me a target to a LOT of strange men I might be alone in the woods with.

Meanwhile, the bears in my area will lumber away if you bellow and wave a stick around-- or let you back away in peace, at the very least, because they don't want to approach anyone bellowing and waving a stick. And because I grew up in the woods, I was taught exactly how to be safe around bears. I have been near bears on a couple of occasions and been perfectly safe the entire time. I've also had a man try to get me alone where I felt like if I didn't get away NOW I might not get away.

And I love men, is the thing. I love being one, I love other men, my male friends are guys who I would LOVE to take a walk in the woods with. I've been out with men in situations where, if I was vulnerable, I trusted *those* men to keep me safe. But going to a bar with the lads, the thing they would protect me from? Isn't bears.

A strange man, where I don't know how he will view me, but I do know statistics? I'll take the bear.

I completely agree with you. I've found the entire thing extremely stupid, and disingenuous.

I do not for one second believe that if these people were truly in a situation where there were only two possible paths, one containing a bear and one containing a man, that they'd choose the one with the bear. Yet so many have argued as if that's literally what they'd do. Give me a break.

Incidentally, there was an actual, real, live bear in my yard this morning (we're in a rural area, it happens). My kid had left the house to walk down to the bus stop only a few minutes before. You sure bet that scared me more than seeing a man outside the house would have!

I only give benefit of a doubt because American black bears are relatively not confrontational. We mostly have brown bears and nope I am taking my chances with a man. Most men are like... ok.

I’ve run into both. I’d choose the bear every single time. Because the man was the only other person for about 12 miles in any direction, he got more agitated by my polite rebuffs and redirections when he asked which campsite I was headed to, he started yelling and cursing at me, and it was only because of bad weather that he finally left me alone and headed in the opposite direction. I hardly slept that night for fear he’d come back.

The bear just ran away when I called out to it. It was just wandering through its home and smelled something unusual so went to investigate. It stepped into my campsite about 100 feet away from me and we both froze, then I called out hello while walking backwards and it turned and ran off. It was more exciting than frightening. I got to see a bear! They’re incredible! And apparently no more a fan of the Folgers instant coffee I was trialling than I was.

I forgot to mention that when I stoped in to report the man at the ranger’s station, the ranger was unwilling to take a report but she did make a ton of excuses for his behavior and said I probably misunderstood his intentions. She kinda handwaved the fact he was shouting and cursing at the end, she told me he was probably just scared because of the approaching storm.
I have no idea if it’s the same guy or not but a man did rape a solo camper at a state park a couple hours away about a month later. They didn’t catch the guy. That park is close to where the man I met said he lived.

I pick bear. By a long shot. I've known how to safely ward off black bears since middle school Girl Scouts. But a man who finds me out in the woods? Was he following me? Who is he? Fuck no. I'm calling the bear for help.
