It'll never cease to amaze that food bloggers complain about inflight/airport lounge/ or train food as being not very good, or basic, and then they show something that would be considered near five star cuisine back when I was in my twenties. All we had were sweaty cheese sandwiches made with stale bread and the cheapest margarine available, and if it were really exotic-a tuna mayo roll.

... it's almost as if they're comparing airport food with other food they've eaten in their own time period and region, instead of comparing it to the food you personally ate when you were in your twenties.

We need to start teaching "how to be wrong" in schools. Everybody is wrong about something, at some point, especially call-out-anon, but so few people know how to handle that. They throw tantrums, they dig their heels in, they try to find a way to carry on as if it had never happened so they don't have to admit it. However, admitting being wrong is healthy. Both personally and for the wider society, but so very few people in our age of increasing self righteousness know how to be wrong, how to handle making mistakes, how to gracefully accept it. I think we need to start teaching it in schools, since parents clearly won't. BICBW.

(but seriously, agreed... teaching folks it's okay to be wrong is right up there with teaching folks it's okay to fail at stuff. You never grow if you don't learn from your mistakes.)

Speaking as a teacher, it is taught in schools. Then the kids get offended and their parents come in to yell at us that we’re the ones who are wrong. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I always wonder how skills like this would be taught. As it is, we already have enough issues agreeing on things like how to teach basic reading skills. I also feel like teaching this in a way that would involve some sort of ranking (not necessarily a letter grade) could end up making things worse.

I agree with this, but I also think it would be most effective if paired with "how to dispute someone's point constructively." So often, even when I understand why someone is receiving hostility for something they said, I think, "The response that person is getting does not leave any space for them to back down, concede the point, or apologize." That doesn't mean they aren't responsible for their bad take. They are. But some ways of disputing statements are a whole lot more effective and constructive than others.

I think this lesson should be paired with teaching people to think critically. They naturally go together.

This plus critical thinking plus empathy should be standard. Also how to shut down bullies as a group and/or not feed a troll.

I mean not really because I know it would fuck things up and overall the internet is a good thing....but sometimes I'm convinced the internet is what is wrong with the world and ruining society.

I wish we could stop seeing education as just a means to an end, the only valuable college degrees being STEM or Business Management etc, and instead start valuing education for education's sake again. To see a well rounded, educated, individual with a passion for life as being more valuable that just a trained whatever.

The man vs bear thing is so fucking stuoid and makes me angry. OF COURSE I'd rather run into/be alone in the woods with a man. Bears are fucking scary! I get what they were trying to say with the whole thought exercise but they failed. Its a stupid comparison.

The more I see on the internet, the more I'm going full curmudgeon about the opinion that no child under 13 should have unlimited access to the internet in general and social media in particular.

Once upon a time California was basically Texas but more chill, ranchers and oil men. Then Texas took a hard right turn down crazy street, to become just Southern North-Florida, and California started getting weird as hell. I have no idea what happened to drive those so similar states in such different directions.

Instead of desexualizing women's breasts, I wish we would start sexualizing men's breasts to the same degree.

Randomly today I remembered that when I was in high school, I bought a skirt from The Gap for a school play and returned the dress after the play was done despite a friend asking if she could buy it from me.

I feel bad now that I'd been insecure and refused to give it to her because I didn't want her to copy me. I understand the game I was playing because we were both insecure teenagers but looking back, I do feel bad that I was that petty.

I wouldn't have been able to admit it when I was younger but now, yeah, I was insecure and didn't want to be reminded of myself if I had to see my friend wear that skirt around me.
