They're fictional characters, you're not hurting anyone by liking their dynamic and having fun with the ship. Especially as an ace yourself. It's okay to relate to the canon depiction while also liking to imagine alternate shipping scenarios. I don't personally find shipping a character outside of their canon orientation to be inherently offensive (yes, including lesbians with guys and gay guys with women). It can be done in a disrespectful and meanspirited way intended to troll queer fans of the character, but if the person writing it is approaching it genuinely (just likes the ship, thinks it's interesting, thinks it would be OOC but totally hot... W/E) I don't see it as strange at all.
