Games thread!

Wait, so... you're complaining that your experience of a game is being tainted by the inclusion of something you haven't actually encountered in the game? Forgive me if I'm not understanding, but "it's not even a thing in the game" doesn't gel with "why did they have to include this thing in the game".

"to me anything 3D feels quite recent"

So... basically the last 30 years?

No, seriously, it's not as recent you think. Super Mario 64 and the original Tomb Raider were 1996, and the original Final Fantasy 7 was 1997. And even earlier titles were playing with 3D in a 2D world.

Okay, but both of those things were, at their core, things made by cishet men for cishet men. The massive female fanbase that happens to have sprung up around them is not, in fact, the target demographic for CRPGs. No matter what said female fanbase, or the "go woke go broke" gamerbro contingent, may believe.

I don’t like feet at all and had to cover the bottom part of the secret while trying to rest the top but I knew the feet were there so my brain kept telling me I was seeing them, anyway.

I think part of my problem with LOTR is that I knew half long as either a race or an affectionate term long before I was introduced to Tolkien. I wish I had started with Tolkien because I’ve consumed so much that was built on his work and creativity, and I like what came later better than the original :(

Not OP but it looks like the mention of that character being their childhood sweetheart IS in the game but the actual relationship isn’t (although if that’s in the game in the secret or its predecessor is unclear to me).
Either way, it’s making a ship canon and I can understand finding that OOC or unnecessary or canon/fandom killing.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-11 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a character background infographic from the official twitter account of the game, so this ship would be considered canon in the game universe even though it wasn't mentioned in the actual game so far.
And the "so far" is kinda the issue because now, I can ignore the infographic throwaway but it could very well become a thing in-game then I couldn't ignore it as well anymore. The game only came out, what, two months ago so a lot could yet happen.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-11 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost. It's an official infographic from the twitter but it's not (yet) mentioned in the game proper. But since the graphic is official, the ship is considered canon.

Is this about Astarion's "canon" sexuality? Because I have seen some shit takes about that, lemme tell you.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-11 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't the story lead for the first three Dragon Age games a gay man?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-11 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I... slightly agree in that I think sometimes fandoms for media by queer creators and women have higher standards, and these can be unreasonable/unfair. I've definitely seen situations where the same fans who give a mistake a pass in a story by a guy suddenly take it as a big deal in a story by a woman. I feel the way you've summarized it here doesn't really explain why that is though and blames the entire thing on progressive/queer/female-leaning fandoms existing... I also agree with the reply saying DA is a bit of a strange example.

OP

Astarion's sexuality discourse wasn't actually one of the things on my mind when I made the secret, but sure, add that one to the list.

It's more of this feeling of disconnection when I see something like Dragon Age Origins or Sims 2 called a retro game when I can still remember the time when having a video game with more than 16 colours was considered top-of-the-line.

Maybe it's an older person thing, but 1996-97 doesn't feel like it happened that long ago at all. So I'd say it's exactly as recent as I, personally, think.
