No, seriously, it's not as recent you think. Super Mario 64 and the original Tomb Raider were 1996, and the original Final Fantasy 7 was 1997. And even earlier titles were playing with 3D in a 2D world.

I think part of my problem with LOTR is that I knew half long as either a race or an affectionate term long before I was introduced to Tolkien. I wish I had started with Tolkien because I’ve consumed so much that was built on his work and creativity, and I like what came later better than the original :(

I've noticed mostly bad guys say "halfling" in the LOTR movies and you can occasionally see a sour look on Merry or Pippin's faces when they hear it. Faramir is not a bad guy but he is somewhat hostile to Frodo and Sam when he first meets them, interesting given he makes friends with Pippin later.

It's almost like they are separate fictional things and so one does not have to pay attention to what might be considered bad in another.

Okay, but both of those things were, at their core, things made by cishet men for cishet men. The massive female fanbase that happens to have sprung up around them is not, in fact, the target demographic for CRPGs.
