IIRC It's a canon thing that Hobbits prefer being called Hobbits over halflings. Halfling derives from 'half-man' and, well, they're not really fond of being called half of anything when they're their own thing.

I always figured it was more of a "their word for themselves vs other people's word", especially when in canon hobbits have been so isolated. The humans they meet who use the word "halfling" have never met one before and are using the word their stories use.
