This one confused me as well. Since when do lots of OCs have red hair. I rarely chararacters with red hair as well. Don't know why.

Overcompensating for a perceived "lack" would make sense. Maybe the writers are redheads themselves, and want to make the characters look like them.

I think it's a fandom to fandom thing. There are ungodly numbers of red haired inserts in Harry Potter, for instance.
To the point that a LOT of troll fic and parody fic have matching drawings with red haired Sues.

At least, that used to be the case. HP fandom has morphed a lot (lot lot lot) since I was active at all.
