I don't know her but looked her up out of interest.
People are making fun of how she looks? She's very beautiful!
Sigh... the beauty standards for women are impossible nowadays.

Yeah, it's complicated. Fandom over on mainland China seems a lot more viciously toxic re: criticizing actors for their appearance, weight, etc. and nitpicking every little thing. Yang Mi's criticism stems from a few factors:

* Up until recently, she tended to play young female lead ingenue type roles where her characters might be teenage girls to mid-20 somethings, rarely older.

* She is a high traffic actor, which means she's hugely popular... but at the same time, she's not considered a serious actor. She takes roles in idol dramas that are very samey and fairly limited range, but recently seems to be trying to transition into more serious roles, which have a different audience and different demands.

* That means a few things: her acting flaws are a lot more conspicuous in serious acting roles, she's not being glammed up in full make up and soft lighting, with post-production skin smoothing, etc. etc. employed. This is a common thing in idol cdramas. She's trying to do her own dialogue (as opposed to being dubbed by a professional voice actor) which is revealing some shortcomings in her Mandarin delivery, which further makes her look like a mediocre actor.

So some people are being very vocally unkind about how "old" she looks, i.e. like a beautiful woman in her late 30s, exacerbated by her unimpressive acting and delivery.

it was a bad idea to start making actors look like porcelain dolls

You know, I'll shit on an actor/musician because I want more from them, so when I see they've improved or are trying (I can't remember which popstar I heard lately that I thought, well, they've had some singing lessons since their first single, good job! I still don't like you, but good job), I won't shit on them. For example, I want more from Zendaya...but...girl...come on. I need more feeling and emotion!

Anyway, she looks fantastic, good for her! And to all the people talking shit, I'm sure they all still look like fresh faced youths -_-
