And at this point, I am just...so done with it. I want good things to sometimes happen to characters I like, and I don't want those good things to immediately be taken away from them.

I blame Game of Thrones.
I feel like I'm the only person who hated GOT from the beginning and now every friggen thing has to be dark and gritty.
I'm old enough to appreciate the lighter shows and movies from the 90s.

Yup. The best early dark and gritty stuff made a point with it and used it and made it interesting. Now everything is dark and gritty and yet the things that could make it work before are gone. It is just dark and awful for the sake of being dark and awful, and most of the characters are unlikable and miserable, and there is nothing hopeful or enjoyable about any of it.

There are people who like that kind of thing. But never been my thing.

I noped out of the dystopias and zombie apocalypses and "after the collapse" scenarios mostly because they seemed incredibly dull. But I love darkfic, and most of what they see fit to put on television is so tame compared to what people can write without gatekeeping. It's like, what they bill as "dark" for mass consumption is more like ... "urban depressive." Or perhaps existentially discouraging. It utterly lacks the depth, breadth, and grandeur I'm looking for.

I love the Sandman and first read it decades ago, but I'm so glad the show didn't try for darker and grittier than the comics because I would've had to nope out.

I've been lucky to not run into many fans who really missed the person turned into an eldritch slime monster and laminated over the walls, or the girl sneaking in to a morgue to fuck a corpse, or...

Anyway dark, gritty, edgy stuff mostly bores me and I know it's a cliche but if I want to despair for humanity I'll read the news.

As someone who does like the edgy stuff a lot of the time, even I agree that that has become the norm and could do with some introspection/commentary/subversion/deconstruction of its own at this point. As in, are things actually this bad, or are the characters bad people? Is it not a personal failing to not try for something better, rather than some "mature" inevitability? Isn't not only accepting the way things really are, but actively improving them for the future the ultimate form of maturity?

The only strong subversion of What's Supposed To Happen In An Edgy Show I can think of off the top of my head is The Mist (2007) film adaptation though.

You know, I'll shit on an actor/musician because I want more from them, so when I see they've improved or are trying (I can't remember which popstar I heard lately that I thought, well, they've had some singing lessons since their first single, good job! I still don't like you, but good job), I won't shit on them. For example, I want more from Zendaya...but...girl...come on. I need more feeling and emotion!

Anyway, she looks fantastic, good for her! And to all the people talking shit, I'm sure they all still look like fresh faced youths -_-

Tbf, Granny makes just as much sense as Fanny. Arguably it makes more sense.

I’ve always loved the melody but the lyrics were confusing and meaningless to me. The same is true of their other big hit, so I’ve never purchased any of their stuff in any format through the years :/

It's weird to me how precious some Swifties get about Taylor's music being received... not even negatively sometimes, but anything less than a glowing review, they seem to think is a threat. I'm used to the musicians (and books and TV shows and movies...) I like getting terrible reviews! And sometimes those things ARE objectively terrible! But then I go back to enjoying whatever it was that I was enjoying. I don't need everybody to like my faves.

(I think some of this is a pendulum swing of how much Swifties got shit on earlier in Taylor's career. "You made fun of us for liking her, but now she's a global superstar, so WE were the most right and YOU were the most wrong, and we need you to admit you were wrong!!!" I've been awake for 19 hours, though. I'm not analyzing all that.)

Random Genshin feels

I'm really enjoying Arlecchino as a playable character. Aside from being powerful and not that challenging to get the hang of, I really like her suit, her aloofness, and the aesthetic of the Fatui as a whole. Also, she's probably the least conspicuously pigeon-toed of the female models. I could do without the completely exaggerated spike heels, but in every other regard, I think she's sharp. They really went for broke with the "evil and regal" aesthetic, and I love it. Also, I think the orphans at the House of Hearth calling her "father" is hilarious, but apt. This is not a maternal woman. More of a ruthless spy who's surprisingly good with children.
