I blame Game of Thrones.
I feel like I'm the only person who hated GOT from the beginning and now every friggen thing has to be dark and gritty.
I'm old enough to appreciate the lighter shows and movies from the 90s.

Movies and TV had been going down that route for a decade already though. The only thing GOT did differently was combine the War Grime Overlay, OTT Faux Realistic Violence, and Fan Favorite Deaths into a single production. Practically every HBO show had at least two of those elements. Oz, Sopranos, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, The Wire…that’s not even mentioning the other premium cable channels’ shows like Rome.
