He got revived later on, and actually had a compelling story in clone wars and rebels. In the latter, he actually got a beautiful sendoff and end to his character arc.

Different anon's got it right. Although your mileage may vary on the death scene and the necessity of killing him off (again) at all. He'd been having a very badass existence in the Clone Wars/Rebels cartoons and the EU, before Disney got creative control over the franchise.
