A brick design came first, flip phones are more 00s.

I miss flip phones.

They're making a comeback though. Not exactly the same as back then but there are several flip versions currently new on the market.

Flip phones weren't really a thing until 00s though? They were still the main kind of phone until like 2011 in America and 2014 in Asia. They’re also still very popular in Asia and becoming popular again in America. They’ve never gone out of production; in America, phone providers have to provide and maintain a network that basic phones can operate on and sell at least two models.

The obsolescence cycle on cars is so much longer, we're used to seeing a range of model years, everything from well maintained classic cars of almost any era to clunkers from 40+ years ago to 10 year old cars to modern cars to those rolling dumpster deathtraps.

I guess it might depend where you grew up, but I remember bricks in the ‘90s and flip phones in the ‘00s. It doesn’t weird me out when I see them in older manga. I think the only time it threw me off was when I watched Sasaki and Miyano and some of the characters had flip phones, but others had smart phones, so I started wondering what time period the show was taking place in.

Still don't get why the characters in the late 80's version of Duck Tales all used 1920's candlestick phones.

Probably because Carl Barks was a kid in the '20s and liked how they looked.

Scrooge was an old man with an old phone

it was all the characters, not just him

They look sick as hell. Extremely fresh design for phones. The drip.

There are flip phones out there though, both newer models and some people have kept older ones. Just think of the characters as quirky or technophobes or hipsters or whatever.

My other half has a flip phone *shrug* He hates smartphones but recently conceded he needed to learn how to do some basic functions on mine in case anything happens to me. He’s learned how to unlock it, select different type fields, and take pictures. The only other thing he really needs to learn still is to access my stored passwords but I have a feeling he’ll just have to google that on his computer if I die unexpectedly.

Somehow, this has never bothered me. Random electronics are as much background to the story in my mind as chair design or carpet patterns.

After seeing how AI is getting built into newer phones, I'm intending to downgrade just to deal with phone calls and texts once my old smartphone craps out.

Same, anon.

I very strongly considered getting a flip phone a few months ago but backed out of it since I need a smartphone for school. But sometimes I still wonder if I could survive with just a fliphone.

Flip phones were more 2000s than 90s.
Also, to my understanding flip phones are still popular enough in various countries for various reasons.
Smart phones - yes - are overwhelmingly popular but there are still people who own flip phones enough that they're still sold.

Something about seeing flip-phones in 2000s-era anime and video games makes me strangely comforted. I remember watching Code Geass and getting all hyperfixated on the wacky flip-phone designs that were supposed to look "futuristic".
