Tbf, Granny makes just as much sense as Fanny. Arguably it makes more sense.

I’ve always loved the melody but the lyrics were confusing and meaningless to me. The same is true of their other big hit, so I’ve never purchased any of their stuff in any format through the years :/

TIL it’s actually Fanny. I always thought it was Annie.

it wasn't Annie?

It’s Fanny. IIRC, the only reason anyone knows that is because of the article when they were on the cover of Rolling Stone. I know the story because it was still a thing in the mid 90s for DJs to occasionally mention it to fill airtime.

I thought it was Mary until today! I am very surprised that it's Fanny.

No, it was Fanny. I learned it was Annie two years ago.

I also thought the line "he caught me in the fog" was "he cut me in the bar"

Huh, I thought that given the lyrics just before the last refrain, it being Fanny would be plain, but I guess not. To be fair, there are a lot of mentions of random people known to members of the Band.

If it makes you feel better...

The Grateful Dead did cover it a lot as an encore in their last few years.
