What is a solder sucker?

Formally it's called a desoldering pump. There are simple squeeze-bulb types, but the kind I was using looks more like this: https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-1lji4r5cj2/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/4069/34919/Desoldering-Pump-Solder-Sucker__S_1__68998.1642087862.jpg?c=1

You push down on the spring-loaded button until it clicks, heat the solder up to molten with your iron, put the tip down on the soft solder and press the trigger, creating a brief vacuum (hence solder sucker).

The tip on that kind is a Teflon-based plastic. Some of the high-end ones use silicone tubes instead, which can make a better seal.
