I'm aroace, and I don't think fiction has anything to do with me being aroace, but I still find this secret kind of relatable in that shipping has been pretty much my one and only romantic and sexual outlet since, well, puberty.

Other people have relationships. Other people get married and start families. I ship my OTPs with a burning passion and consume massive amounts of fanfic.

I love my OTPs. I love shipping, and fanfic. But man what I wouldn't give to be allo.

I think you're being much too hard on yourself, anon.

I've been gay-married for half a decade, after meeting someone in person that I'd been online friends with and unexpectedly falling in love with each other. But I never expected this. She never expected this. Neither of us put any effort into dating or had anything resembling a normal love life before we met each other. So, my impression is, you might be better off having whatever amount of social interaction makes you happy, and if that doesn't mesh with other people's expectations, it's really their problem, not yours.

I had three decades and some with all the freedom of being single. That makes the work that goes into making the bicultural, long term relationship I'm in now feel lighter. And it gives me the assurance that I'm in this because this specific person is incredibly special to me - not because being alone was ever something I fled from.

I'd characterize "a partner who's hot and young forever," "a partner who just KNOWS what you need without needing that explained to them and can always meet those needs," and "a partner who wants what you want by some miraculous coincidence, and never disagrees with you about anything important" as media-promoted unrealistic expectations. But a lot of the other compatibility things people assert don't really exist? They're being cynical. Real relationships run the whole gamut from nightmarish to paradisical. If stories do it for you, they're not less-than anything. But the older I get, the more Mark Twain's quip, 'truth is stranger than fiction because fiction is supposed to make sense' seems apt.

To an extent, I can relate to this secret a lot.

I've never dated. Only ever had rather shallow crushes but they were only in high school.

I have wondered if I'm Ace, and I think I fall on the spectrum somewhere, but I've had to unpack things slowly to think harder about what my identity is.
Like, seriously, I had to unpack where my expectations for relationships came from, am I gay/bi/queer, societal expectations in all aspects of my life, work through many forms of shame and fear on these things....
And it's still a work in progress.

I hope you can find happiness and joy, no matter what OP.

Is there any point in sending a question about a request for a potential update?

Since there's now a way to mute/block authors I was wondering if they'd ever implement the same thing, but with specific fics since I don't necessarily want to block any authors - but there are definitely unfinished/constantly 'updating' fics that I would happily block if it was an option.
