What are you reading?

I am trying to finish up A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and it is a struggle. Which is not the books fault. I am enjoying the book! And I only have about 100 pages left, but I just keep getting distracted. The majority of my brain is not about it right now.

Heather Fawcett, The School between Winter and Fairyland. A children's magic-school story from the POV of one of the servant girls (cares for the magical beasts, and is searching for her vanished twin.) I liked an adult book by the author, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, and am trying her other books. So far this one is quite good and I'll probably finish it in the next couple of days.

I might check that out. I like a good kids book! I used to read a lot of YA before YA was really a category, but ever since it became A Thing I feel like the quality has gone way down. Middle Grade books are often better than a lot of YA imo.

Struggling through Smoke In Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty. I really liked the first book I read from her but am not feeling this one as much.

I need to find a fiction book to read next.

Borrowed a copy of Barry Hughart's 8 Skilled Gentlemen from the friend who turned me on to the Master Li books to start with. I can't find THAT book anywhere, I have copies of the first two in my collection but that last one has eluded me.

It's a goddamned shame Hughart got so screwed by publishers that he never wrote again. The trilogy evokes Holmes but in a Chinese fantasy way that, tbh, nothing else has really managed to achieve. It has a touch of Douglas Adams about it but was written in a time before Adams really had reknown for his style. I know I won't ever find anything like it and that makes it hard to finish this last book. I have four chapters to go and I don't want to (except that my friend wants his book back).

Never heard of it but that sounds fascinating. I am going to add it to my list of books/authors to keep an eye out for at used bookstores.

And was slightly disappointed and kind of confused....but overall it was a fun read. I've never read any other Amor Towles books and I really enjoyed the style of writing. And now I am happy to be done with it and move on to something else!
